Kathmandu: The first Buddhist International Travel Mart (BITM 2019) concluded in Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha.
Under the theme “Explore the Buddha land Nepal,” the travel mart aimed to promote the Buddhist sites, spreading the message that Nepal is a center for world peace.
Nepal plans to develop a Buddhist circuit covering Lumbini and Devdaha of Rupandehi, Tilaurakot, Kudan, Sagarhawa and Niglihawa of Kapilvastu and Ramgram of Nawalparasi district.
Meanwhile, experts have called for increased investment in the tourism sector to exploit the huge potential of Buddhist tourism in Nepal.
Speaking at a seminar organized by the Lumbini Buddhist University in Lumbini on Saturday, they said Buddhist philosophy was the foundation of Nepal’s tourism, and hence it needs to be promoted.
Vice-chair of the Lumbini Development Trust Bhikshu Metteya said the government should come up with an appropriate policy to increase investment in Buddhist tourism in the country.
“India has invested a project worth Rs 40 billion in Buddhist tourism, and that has led to economic progress,” he said.
Dean of the University Manik Ratna Shakya also called for concrete government plan to expand Buddhist philosophy, RSS reports.
